Saudi Aramco's 400,000-barrel-per-day Jizan refinery was hit in a new attack on Monday, threatening a key Red Sea refining hub. Saudi Arabia is redirecting oil production west through its East West pipeline to avoid the Strait of Hormuz, following escalating Houthi attacks targeting Aramco facilities in Jizan and Yanbu. The Financial Times reported that the latest strike, similar in scale to one last month, temporarily disrupted operations.
No group has been confirmed responsible, though Jizan has become a frequent target since Houthi-Yemen conflict resumed this summer. Attacks in July and August caused visible smoke over the refinery, and oil shipments have since declined sharply, with no exports recorded in August. Houthi attacks also threaten tankers and oil infrastructure along the Red Sea export route.
Aramco CEO Amin Nasser previously stated earlier attacks caused only temporary interruptions but had no material operational or financial impact. Meanwhile, oil prices rose above $97 per barrel on Monday amid Iran’s proposal for a new shipping corridor through Hormuz, following recent U.S.-Iran tensions including strikes on Iranian oil tankers and missile attacks on U.S. warships.
